The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has marked a significant achievement by being granted 300 patents in the year 2023. This figure represents a notable increase from the 156 patents granted in the previous year, 2022. Moreover, the institute has witnessed a substantial surge in international patents filed, including those granted under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), reaching 105 in 2023 compared to 58 in 2022.
As of December 2023, the institute has already filed 221 patents during the current fiscal year, comprising 163 Indian patents and 63 international patent applications, which includes those filed under the PCT.
Since its establishment, IIT Madras has accumulated a total of approximately 2,550 Intellectual Property (IP) applications, encompassing both patents and other forms of IP, filed both in India (about 1,800) and abroad (about 750). Out of these, around 1,100 have been successfully registered IPs and granted patents, comprising approximately 900 Indian patents and 200 international patents.
